Vanessa Benelli Mosell
Biography
Vanessa Benelli Mosell is a conductor whose artistic profile brings together a broad spectrum of musical and cultural influences. Her development as a conductor has been shaped by close artistic exchange with leading figures such as Daniel Harding, Mikko Franck, Cristian Măcelaru, George Benjamin and Paavo Järvi, alongside formal studies with Arturo Tamayo and Ekhart Wycik.
From an early age, her musical interests were closely connected to the orchestra and the operatic stage. She made her conducting debut in 2018 with a programme centred on the music of Gérard Grisey, an experience that marked the beginning of her regular activity on the podium and underlined her strong affinity for 20th- and 21st-century repertoire.
Since then, Vanessa Benelli Mosell has conducted a wide range of orchestras and ensembles across Europe. Her recent and upcoming engagements include appearances with the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento, the Göttinger Symphonieorchester (in Uelzen and at Stadthalle Göttingen), the Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, the Orchestre Lamoureux at Salle Gaveau in Paris, and the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina. Further collaborations have included the Klassische Philharmonie Bonn (with performances at the Konzerthaus Berlin, Laeiszhalle Hamburg and Liederhalle Stuttgart), the Wiener KammerOrchester, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Jenaer Philharmonie, the Hof Symphoniker, the Romanian Chamber Orchestra, the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Academic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine.
Her work also extends to the operatic and music-theatre repertoire. She has conducted concert and semi-staged opera productions including Hänsel und Gretel with the Recreation Orchester Graz and La Traviata at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar, where she worked closely with the Staatskapelle Weimar as Assistant Conductor. Further operatic experience includes Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Landestheater Coburg.
A central aspect of Vanessa Benelli Mosell’s artistic identity is her commitment to contemporary music. She has collaborated with ensembles such as Divertimento Ensemble Milano and Le Balcon at Radio France in Paris, and has worked closely with leading contemporary composers including George Benjamin, Olga Neuwirth, Hugues Dufourt, Philippe Scholler, Vittorio Montalti, Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber and Marco Stroppa. Numerous works have been dedicated to her, and she has given a significant number of national and international premières.
Alongside her conducting career, Vanessa Benelli Mosell maintains an international profile as a pianist, with an extensive discography and regular appearances as a soloist with major orchestras. This background as an instrumentalist plays an important role in shaping her work on the podium, characterised by structural clarity, detailed score knowledge and a refined sense of orchestral colour and balance.
She studied at the International Piano Academy in Imola, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Royal College of Music in London, before turning her focus increasingly towards conducting. She has been selected as an Active Conductor for the Järvi Conducting Academy and has participated in masterclasses with the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation.
