Biography
Leonhard Baumgartner, born in 2007 in Vienna, is a prizewinner of renowned competitions, including First Prize, Grand Prix, and the Audience Award at the Osaka International Music Competition, the Discovery Award of the International Classical Music Awards, and the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition of the EBU 2024.
He made his debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus at the age of 15 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
He is a scholarship holder of the Music Academy Liechtenstein and the Kronberg Academy. His studies are supported by the Nina Gscheider & Florian Schwarz Scholarship and by the Mentorship Program of the Stretton Society.
He took on a special role in the world premiere and recording of a newly discovered work by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for Deutsche Grammophon; the recording is among the widely acclaimed classical releases of 2024.
This season he performs in Australia for the first time, where he interprets Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
Further highlights include his debut with Brahms’ Violin Concerto at the Vienna Musikverein and appearances with other major orchestras, such as the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, and the Dresden Philharmonic, among others.
He studies the violin with Dora Schwarzberg at the mdw Vienna. Further studies with Ingolf Turban in Munich, and previously with Regina Brandstätter.
Leonhard Baumgartner plays a violin by Antonio Stradivari “ex Petherick” (Cremona, 1683). The instrument is on loan through a member of the Stretton Society.
