Further artistic inspiration came from masterclasses with Ramón Vargas, Robert Holl, and Elīna Garanča.
On the operatic stage, Grassauer has appeared in a wide range of repertoire. Engagements have included Masetto in Don Giovanni at the Stadttheater Baden bei Wien, the Marchese in La traviata at the Klosterneuburg Festival, and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro at the Schönbrunn Palace Theatre. He sang the Speaker in Mozart’s The Magic Flute on a Teatro alla Scala tour in Shanghai and performed Frank in Die Fledermaus at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf.
Up to and including the 2023/24 season, Alexander Grassauer was a member of the ensemble of Munich’s Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. There he appeared, among many roles, as the Speaker, Masetto and Leporello in Don Giovanni, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Alidoro in La Cenerentola, Monterone in Rigoletto, Count Walter in Luisa Miller, and again Frank in Die Fledermaus.
He is also in demand as a concert singer. His repertoire ranges from song recitals to major choral symphonic works. Highlights include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Bangkok, Lisbon, and at Salzburg’s Großes Festspielhaus, Bach’s St John Passion and Handel’s Messiah at the Vienna Konzerthaus, Mozart’s Requiem in Germany, and Mendelssohn’s St Paul in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. Further engagements have taken him to Italy, Hungary, and Poland.
In the 2024/25 season, Grassauer appears as a Young Talent of the Vienna Konzerthaus in a variety of concert formats. He also returns to the Gärtnerplatztheater as a guest, including performances as Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. At the Vienna Chamber Opera he takes part in Gottfried von Einem’s modern opera Der Prozess, before concluding the season with his debut at the Bayreuth Festival. There he appears as Hermann Ortel in a new production of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg conducted by Daniele Gatti.
Alexander Grassauer has received numerous international awards. He won first prizes at the Hariclea Darclée Singing Competition in Romania (2017), the International Brahms Competition (2017), and the Ferruccio Tagliavini Competition.
